Porcelain veneers are one of the most powerful procedures in cosmetic dentistry. If your teeth are crooked, chipped, damaged, gapped, or discolored, porcelain veneers can fix them. Or if you just wish your teeth were longer, larger, or shaped differently, porcelain veneers can do that, too. It’s like getting an entirely new smile. And porcelain veneers are very durable, typically lasting ten years or more.
What Are Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers, offer one of the most effective solutions for addressing common cosmetic dental problems. These wafer-thin shells are custom created by our dental lab partners to cover cosmetic imperfections and produce a seamlessly beautiful appearance to teeth that are:
- Unevenly spaced or crooked
- Irregularly shaped or sized
- Chipped or cracked
- Discolored underneath the enamel
Tarrytown cosmetic dentist Dr. Wanda Mejia or Dr. George Sepiashvili may use veneers as a stand-alone option on one or more teeth, or as part of a complete smile makeover. This is based entirely on the unique needs of your smile.
The Dental Veneer Process
To place dental veneers, your cosmetic dentist will first need to prepare your teeth. We remove a small amount of your natural tooth enamel so your veneers will fit smooth and snug against your teeth. Once your teeth have been prepared, we will make and impression of your smile. Then we’ll fit you with temporary veneers. These temporary veneers look pretty good, so you can enjoy your beautiful new smile right away.
The impression of your smile will be sent to our dental lab partners who will create your veneers to Dr. Mejia’s exact specifications. Once your custom veneers have been made, you will return to our office to have them placed.
Dental veneers are made of porcelain which is why they are commonly called porcelain veneers. But you have to understand that the word “porcelain” basically means white ceramic, and today’s porcelain is not what it was even ten years ago. Today we use an advanced ceramic composite that is also used in bulletproof vests and tank armor. As a result, more than 90% of porcelain veneers last ten years or more, and more than 80% last over 20 years. So if you get six veneers and you care for them properly, you can expect to replace one over the next 20 years.
Caring for Your Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers used to be made of porcelain, but now they are made of advanced ceramics. These are strong and stain resistant, but not impossible to damage. It is important that you take care of your veneers to help ensure they last for years to come. Once they have been placed, your dental hygiene routine may need to be slightly modified to help guard against scratching or otherwise damaging their outer layer.
While you should still brush and floss normally, you may need to switch to a nonabrasive toothpaste. It is also important that you do not use a mouthwash that contains alcohol as this substance can weaken the bonding material used to hold veneers in place. We will discuss this with you in more detail during your initial porcelain veneer consultation.
