If you have a tooth that is significantly damaged by decay or trauma, that tooth isn’t lost. In fact, with dental crowns, that tooth might be made almost as good as new. A dental crown gives your tooth an entirely new visible surface, restoring its beauty as well as its function. A tooth that has been restored with a dental crown can last a lifetime.

What Dental Crowns Can Do
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that can be placed over existing teeth or used in conjunction with a dental bridge or implant to replace a missing tooth. In addition, Tarrytown dentists Dr. Wanda Mejia and Dr. George Sepiashvili commonly use dental crowns to:
- Strengthen a tooth weakened by decay
- Protect a tooth with a large dental filling
- Preserve a tooth that has been broken, chipped, or worn down
- Guard against damage following a root canal
- Support the bite as part of TMJ treatment
The role dental crowns play in strengthening and protecting your smile will be dependent on your unique dental issues. Our cosmetic dentists can discuss this with you in more detail during your initial consultation.
Placing Dental Crowns
At Advanced Dentistry of Tarrytown, we work with dental labs that custom create crowns to look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. Because we offer only the highest quality crowns, you will need to visit our office twice to complete this procedure.
During your first office visit, Dr. Wanda or Dr. George will prepare your tooth by removing a small amount of your natural tooth enamel. This will allow your crown to more easily fit over the tooth being treated. Once your tooth has been prepared, an impression will be made of your smile and you will be fitted with a temporary crown.
The impression of your smile will be sent to our dental lab partners who will carefully craft your restoration to fit flawlessly into your smile. This process generally takes one to two weeks, during which time you will continue to wear your temporary crown. Once your customized crown has been made, you will return to our office to have it placed.
Whenever possible, we use all-porcelain crowns. However, in some instances porcelain-fused-to-metal or gold crowns will be necessary for a full restoration of function. Dr. Wanda or Dr. George will discuss all of your options with you during your first office visit.
